Plant Care Tips

Heuchera are vigorous growers and wonderfully easy to care for.  Adding some organic matter to the soil before you plant will help give it a great start.  Adding a little mulch in the summer will help retain moisture.  Good drainage is essential, particularly in the winter, particularly, as the plants tend to heave up as a result of frozen ground.  To help avoid this problem, add compost around the plant in the fall.  Shear off damaged leaves in the spring, making way for new growth.  You'll see the strongest colouring if you plant Heuchera in partial shade.  Purple colours seem to do well in sunny location, while orange or gold colours do best in the shade.  Deadhead the flowers to keep the plants looking tidy.  Heucheras are relatively disease resistant, particularly if the soil is adequately prepared.  Divide the plants every 3 or 4 years.  These plants can be placed under Black Walnut trees as they are not affected by the Juglone toxin produced by the tree roots.
